Troll knot

The crossed O symbol has been used for thousands of years. Similar shapes are found in

many ancient alphabets and cultures from Egyptian Hieroglyphs to Futhark runes, although it disappeared from old Scandinavian alphabets as a runic letter in around the 8th century, it was still seen in England for another 300 years. The symbol itself in old Nordic runes represents heritage, ancestral land, inheritance, and the home. There is a theory that a similar shape was made of iron and worn for protection against dark magic.

Crucially it is also linked to Udal Law which protected the right of women to inherit land;

this is still used today in some Nordic countries and parts of Scotland. In the 1990’s it

became popular as a Troll Knot. Whatever the history of this shape, we think it is such a

lovely, smooth and welcoming shape that it is bound to help the wearer to feel empowered, especially when embellished with rose cut diamonds and hand engraving!
